An Introduction to Makeup: Types of Makeup

If you know zero about makeup, or if you lot're learning near makeup and you lot need a review of the nuts, then this is the post for you. Consider this your ultimate introduction to makeup and the earth of various makeup products.

Below we've listed every blazon of makeup, along with a quick description of what it is, and how it'south used. There are over 20 makeup types in all, and we talk over each in item, and and then, alllll the manner at the bottom, nosotros talk about the guild of makeup application.

Types of Makeup

At that place is a lot---seriously, a lot---of information here, and it will provide you with an incredible base of cognition about makeup. If you lot tin't read it all in one sitting, that'southward totally fine---stop reading and come back later.

Product #1: Moisturizer

And then, this is not technically a cosmetic, but it'south an of import office of whatever makeup routine, then nosotros're going to include it, and we're going to include information technology first, because information technology's one of the first things you lot should do after cleaning your face in the morning.

A moisturizer is any mixture that protects peel by keeping information technology hydrated. It'south kind of the super-hero of your makeup drove: it tin proceed you from developing wrinkles, retain the water and oils in your skin and so that the wrinkles that you do have don't await exaggerated, and it provides a reliable base of operations for your makeup (and we'll talk more than about that in a second). It creates a protective layer on your epidermis---that is, the top layer of your skin---to keep moisture and oils in.

Basically, there are 2 different types of moisturizers: the kind you lot article of clothing before you put on your makeup, and the kind you lot put on at the stop of the mean solar day, before yous go to sleep (and, technically, there are a TON of different skincare products yous can put on before yous go to sleep, simply we'll go on information technology simple for the time being).

Every bit with all things makeup, you have roughly iv thousand options when it comes to purchasing a moisturizer. You lot want to choose a moisturizer depending on whatever peel issues you have: cosmetics companies make products for oily and/or acne-prone skin, dry skin, sensitive pare, and aging skin. At that place are not comedogenic versions and organic varieties. They likewise make moisturizer with sunscreen, which, if you're putting it on at the beginning of the solar day (which you should), will protect you from harmful UV radiation from the sun.

Remember before, when we said that moisturizer provides a reliable base for your makeup? That'southward one of its most important aspects. Merely like a skilful foundation, moisturizer keeps your confront in place. It doesn't thing if you lot have the almost expensive makeup in the world---if you lot haven't prepared your skin to wear makeup, it won't sit down right. In fact, every bit Allure states hither, almost professional makeup artists spend just as much time preparing their models' skin (that is, cleaning it and moisturizing it) as they practice *actually applying makeup.* That truly shows how important information technology is to moisturize properly.

Production #two: Primer

Up adjacent in our introduction to makeup: primer.

There are a couple of different kinds of primer---lip primer, eyelid primer, and mascara primer---but hither we're referring to foundation primer. That's what most people mean when they say "primer."

Primer is practical after your moisturizer, only Earlier your foundation (that'due south why it's sometimes called a "foundation primer"), and it's another superstar in the magnificent drama that is makeup. It has two principal purposes: to provide a smoothen base on which your makeup can residuum, and to dramatically increment the longevity of your makeup.

Merely---and this is why primer is a lot of people's favorite makeup product---it can do a lot more. Information technology can:

  • Seal pores. No matter how big or pocket-size your pores are, foundation makeup makes pores less visible.
  • Smooth fine lines. By filling in gaps in your epidermis, it makes your skin appear flat and smooth.
  • Help solve pigmentation problems. Some foundations take skin-care ingredients, and tin can right dark spots over time.
  • Reduce redness and embrace acne. Foundations vary greatly in the amount of pigment they incorporate, and some tin can be used to cover rosacea and blemishes. Others have salicylic acid, that magical, oil-and-bacteria-absorbing stuff that fights acne and pimples.
  • Shields your face. Y'all are under constant barrage from dust and debris, and foundation products your skin from whatever unwanted materials floating your way.
  • Keep you looking great in farthermost atmospheric condition. If you live in an atmosphere that is hot-and-boiling or cold-and-dry out, primer keeps your makeup right where y'all originally applied it.

It sounds similar something that does all this would exist thick and oppressive-feeling, merely that's another wonderful thing near primers: they're usually lightweight, and very piece of cake to apply.

So how does information technology do all that? In that location'southward a lot of chemistry involved, simply basically, primer is manufactured with a business firm-ish consistency that fills the minute crevices on the surface of your skin and gives you lot a satin-y shine look, while at the same time, blocking the sweat from coming through your pores, thereby leaving your makeup untouched.

Primers are sold every bit creams, gels, and powders, although virtually people like to use the cream diverseness. They can exist further split into 2 kids: water-based primers and silicon-based primers. The silicon-based primers do a better job of creating a smooth-skin appearance, only some people accept allergic reactions to it, then those with peel bug should look for a water-based foundation. In that location are a lot of variations with primers---at that place's mattifying primer, tinted primers, non comedogenic, and then on---but those are the two main varieties.

If you lot're looking for a primer, you should find something that suits your ain unique skin conditions. To keep things unproblematic, there are ii kinds of primers: the type for normal-to-dry skin, and the blazon for oily pare.

(One quick additional annotation: above, we mentioned lip primers and eyelid primers and mascara primers. Those serve the same function as a foundation primer, in that they prime the lips and eyelids and eyelashes, and let makeup to stay put a lot longer. We'll hash out those primers in the sections beneath.)

Production #three: Foundation

Foundation (which people sometimes refer to every bit "base") is a flesh-colored makeup that's used to covers blemishes and flaws, only most chiefly, to create a single, uniform skin color on the wearer's face. Many people seem to recall that foundation is just for women and men who have some skin discoloration, just that's not the case---foundation is an important component of any makeup routine.

"Slow down, MakeupArtistEssentials.com," you may be saying. "That sounds a LOT of work. I need to apply a moisturizer, a primer, and so a primer---earlier I even put any other kind of makeup on?"

First of all---y'all've been paying attending! Good work.

Second of all---that'southward correct, and hither's why those three items are so important: the three products basically work together and provide a i-ii-three punch. Moisturizer keeps yous from destroying your face every solar day by using makeup. The primer smooths over whatever wrinkles and craters in the face, and allows the foundation to stick to it. Finally, the foundation provides a solid base of operations that keeps your makeup from sliding off your face and onto the floor. With these three items, you're ready to make yourself truly fabulous.

And so how do you lot cull a foundation? They're available equally liquids, creams, or powders (although pulverization foundations are less and less pop, information technology seems), and most oft---almost always, in fact---y'all're trying to choose a shade that is very shut to your natural skin color (subsequently all, it can be very embarrassing when the color of the foundation on your face up doesn't match the colour of your skin on your neck). The names of colors vary profoundly from brand to brand (and that is truthful for, similar, every kind of makeup e'er made), so you'll take to find a shade that looks right on you. Keep in listen that the color of a foundation in a bottle may wait very different in the bottle than it looks on your pare. As with near things related to cosmetics, y'all'll need to experiment with a couple different products to find one you lot like. It's a rare affair to selection a foundation and detect that it's PERFECT for yous. That's non actually how makeup works; oft times, it's a process of elimination. You endeavor a bunch of different products until yous find ane that you like.

One of the principal aspects you lot'll need to go on in heed is "coverage." A lighter-coverage foundation will be translucent (meaning that yous can run into through information technology), and a medium- or total-coverage foundation with exist opaque (meaning that y'all CANNOT see through it).

Here'southward how it shakes out:

  • Sheer foundation has very little paint in it, and it's almost transparent (or in some cases, totally transparent). It doesn't hide blemishes or discolorations, but tin even out the peel tone between different regions of the face. Sheer foundation contains nigh seven% to 12% paint.
  • Calorie-free foundation is a liiiiiiiiiiiiitle flake darker, and contains about 13% to 17% pigment. There's not much of a desperate deviation between "sheer" and "light"---you'll still see some blemishes, freckles, scars, etc.
  • Medium coverage is much heavier---commonly somewhere around 18% to 24% pigment---and can cover redness, freckles, some blemishes, and some scars.
  • Total coverage is anywhere from 25% to 50% pigment---in other words, very thick---and tin can hide well-nigh anything y'all want to hibernate. You lot obviously want to be careful with total coverage foundation, considering it'due south got to lucifer your skin color, or else it'll look splotchy and odd.

One time you've chosen a foundation, yous'll need to utilise it. Depending on the type you choose (liquid vs. cream vs. powder), yous can utilize brushes, sponges, or your fingers. Some people swear by brushes; others honey sponges; many simply utilise their hands. There's a lot of debate about the best application method, but whatsoever you lot use, you desire to avoid streaks (that's a problem with using your fingers), not rub bacteria all over your face (which tin can happen if you don't supersede your sponges oftentimes enough), and keep from irritating your skin (which can be an issue with some brushes).

Every bit with most beauty products, at that place are a range of options available, and you can detect non comedogenic foundations, organic types, cruelty-free/vegan varieties, and so on.

Product #four: BB Cream, aka Beauty Balm Cream

Aaaaaaah BB creams, the dazzler product we all dear to hate. The merely matter nosotros honey to hate even more than is CC cream, and so, of course, DD cream. So what are these products, and why practise some women admittedly rave almost them?

BB creams are fairly new to North American markets. The product was very pop in many Asian markets (particularly South Korea), merely it wasn't until 2011 (in other words, adequately recently) that cosmetics companies starting developing and selling BB creams in the United States and Canada and other Western countries.

The idea of BB creams was to create a product that would exist an "all-in-one" corrective production: instead of using a moisturizer, then a primer, and and then a foundation, and and then a concealer, you lot could just use a BB cream and be on your manner. The product is created to take it all, and it has moisturizing agents similar hyaluronic acid and glycerin, anti-aging agents like Vitamins A, C, and Eastward, silicon additives that flatten wrinkles and craters, and pigments that create a uniform skin tone.

So, BB creams are a match made in heaven for a lot of people. If y'all hate the procedure of moisturizing + priming + adding foundation + etc., BB creams are a neat time saver. They're also affordable---there are, of grade, high-end options, simply there are enough of good quality, drugstore brands that are very cheap. They come in foam form (obvs), so you tin can apply with your fingers, a brush, or a sponge. You lot tin layer it to get a fuller coverage or a smoother, more than porcelain-like look.

At that place'south one thing we'd like to suggest: if you're here because you'd like to go a makeup artist, you don't want to rely also heavily on BB creams. BB creams are kind of a shortcut and if you're going to be a makeup artist, you need to chief your technique. Information technology takes fourth dimension to chief each of the types of makeup, and if you lot're using BB / CC / DD creams instead of moisturizing, priming, and calculation foundation, you won't be edifice the skills you demand to exist a professional person.

That said, if you're here to simply learn about makeup, check them out. They're not super-popular---it's estimated that less than 5% of American / Canadian / Western makeup users use BB cream---merely the people we know who like BB creams are kind of obsessed with them. It may take a while to find one that matches your skin tone and moisturizes affectively, but hey, that's makeup. No matter how great a product is, information technology might non work for you, so you have to experiment until you find what works for you lot.

Product #4.one: CC Cream, aka Color Correcting Foam

This one is pretty easy: a CC cream offers all of the same things as a BB cream, but also includes compounds that help in colour correction. If y'all have any pare bug related to color or shade---i.due east., redness, sallowness, dark spots, discoloration---CC cream might exist for you. Most cosmetics companies have a CC cream product, and prices range from "cheap" from "woah, very expensive."

Our Recommended Products:

Lumene CC Color Correcting Cream (Medium)
It Cosmetics Your Pare But Better CC+ Cream (Light)

Product #4.ii: DD Foam, aka...?

Some people say that DD stands for "Daily Defense," and others say that information technology stands for "Dynamic Do-All." DD cream has---you guessed it---all the components of BB foam and CC cream, but the big selling point of a DD cream is its anti-aging backdrop. DD cream diminishes fine lines and wrinkles, and keeps new ones from forming.

VOOX DD Cream
DERMAdoctor DD Cream

Production #five: Setting Powder

There's a lot of confusion nigh powder. What exercise people mean when they say "pulverization"? There's setting powder, loose pulverisation, pressed powder, finishing powder... what are these things, and why exercise they matter?

About of the time, when people refer to powder, they're referring to setting powder, which is a product that you use afterwards your foundation. Information technology'due south a mattifying corrective, and it's a great base of operations for you lot to use bronzer, blush, and whatsoever else comes next. It tin be translucent or it can have a tone that matches your pare color.

Setting pulverisation comes in two varieties: loose powder, which is easy to use but doesn't travel well (then yous keep it at home and use it there) and pressed powder, which is piece of cake to utilize and DOES travel well (and so you bring it with you lot when you're out).

Finishing powders and Hd powders aren't used as much, and at that place's a lot of debate as to when to utilize them and why to apply them, so nosotros've written a divide mail service about them.

Our Recommended Products:

Maybelline Fit Me Loose Finishing Pulverisation
Dermablend Loose Setting Powder

Product #6: Concealer

The next item in our introduction to makeup: concealer.

Everybody WANTS perfect skin, only let's be honest: very few people have it. And those people who DO seem like they have perfect skin---well, very often, they're just really proficient at using concealer.

We haven't washed whatsoever official studies, but we're willing to bet: if we interviewed one,000 makeup artists and another 1,000 women who utilize makeup every twenty-four hours, and nosotros asked them to name their favorite makeup product, nosotros're guessing every unmarried one of them would say "concealer." Information technology's like the makeup version of your all-time friend: information technology knows all of your facial flaws merely keeps them secret, and helps you wait and experience flawless. It hides acne, blemishes, dark circles, scars, rosacea, broken blood vessels, and whatsoever else you lot don't want the world to see. It is---and we're not exaggerating---the absolute best thing ever. OK, fine, we're exaggerating a piddling chip. But concealer tin be very effective.

And so what is it, exactly? It's a thick cosmetic---thicker than foundation---that provides spot-coverage for blemishes and skin imperfections. Information technology's heavily pigmented, but comes in a range of colors to match whatsoever skin tone (and that'southward very important, as we'll discuss in a minute), and commonly produced to be very long-lasting, so your skin imperfections don't determine to jump out in the middle of the twenty-four hour period. There are several different types that are available:

  • Liquid Concealer. This is mayhap the most mutual variety, and liquid concealers come up in a range of coverage options, from calorie-free to medium to full coverage. Use it for normal pare, combination peel, oily skin, acne-prone pare, and sensitive peel. If you have acne, this is a peachy option, because information technology'south less likely to lead to further breakouts (whereas a creamier concealer might do then). You tin can apply with your fingers or a wand or a sponge, and there are options for matte, satin, dewy, and shimmer.
  • Cream Concealer. Good for normal skin, dry skin, and combination pare. Cream concealer usually comes in a small pot or palette, and it works really well for night rings under the optics, because it usually provides a fuller coverage than liquid concealer. Besides skillful for sensitive skin, but bad for acne-decumbent skin.
  • Cream-to-Pulverisation Concealer. This is less pop than the other types of concealers, because it doesn't offering the same coverage (it's a light-to-normal coverage product) and it'south a bad selection for people who are prone to any kind of acne. If you have normal to dry skin and you're looking for light-to-normal coverage, it can be a good choice.
  • Stick Concealer. If you have normal to dry skin and yous're looking for medium-to-dark coverage, this is your best bet. Information technology'south a creamy semi-solid (kind of like a lipstick would be) and it'south fantastic for very dark circles and more severe discoloration. If you have acne, be conscientious using this---people with acne tend to like stick concealer because it can cover just about anything, but using it can exist a bad idea, considering the thickness of the cosmetic tin clog pores and actually create further breakouts.

(Go on in heed, sometimes you'll demand more than one blazon of concealer. If y'all have a couple of different problem areas, you lot may want to purchase ii different kinds---for instance, if you take dry, nighttime circles nether your eyes, yous'd desire to use a flossy concealer with a moisturizer, but if yous also have a pimple on your cheek, that creamy concealer with moisturizer might elongate the life of that pimple. It's not uncommon for people to use different concealers for different facial areas.)

Once you detect a concealer that's a match for your skin type, you lot'll desire to get the right tone. Many makeup artists suggest finding a concealer color one shade lighter than your foundation; just be careful not to go too much lighter, considering once again, you want to brand sure that y'all have a uniform peel tone across your face up.

Production #7: Contour

Contouring used to be a kind of "undercover technique" that was only used past makeup artists on rail models. Simply, thanks to the internet and hundreds of millions of YouTube instructionals, the underground is out.

Here's how it works: a contour is a powder or liquid or pencil that is (ideally) one shade darker than the pare, and normally matte in finish (in other words, not shiny; flat). It is applied to various areas of the confront---usually at the cheekbones, past the jawline, at the top of the brow, and forth the nose---to create the illusion of shadows and depth on the face, and define the facial construction. Skillful utilize of contouring can create a more "angular" wait---that is, high cheekbones and a slimmer olfactory organ and mentum---and, allow's be honest, the "angular" wait has been popular for most of recorded history, so contouring is a pretty pop technique.

(Quick note: The complement to a contour is a highlighter, which amplifies the lite that hits your face, and deepens the shadows you've created with the contour. We'll hash out highlighters in the side by side section.)

There are a couple of things you demand to continue in mind when you're choosing a contour:

  • Get a matte production. Contours are not supposed to be shimmery; they're supposed to provide depth, and any kind of shimmer would defeat the point. Finding a matte contour shouldn't really be difficult, considering about contours are disordered anyway.
  • Get the color right. Ideally, you're looking for a contour makeup that's 1 shade darker than your normal peel tone. Any darker than that, and your contour will make you look very, very foreign. Many women who are new to makeup think that a darker contour will result in more than effective contouring, only that is Non true. At all. A contour that'south too dark will make you look like a crazy person.
  • Get the right tools and utilise it properly. If you're using a cream, you can use your fingers. Your fingers will rut the product then that it melds perfectly onto and into your skin. If yous're using a powder, in that location are plenty of brushes that work wonders. Brand sure you employ well, considering---nosotros've mentioned this before and you probably know what's coming---it's allllllllllll near blending. You lot desire to make sure that the contour is blended perfect with your skin.
  • At that place are substitutes bachelor. A darker-toned foundation can be a good substitute for a profile, as can a concealer that's the right color. And, many people employ a bronzer, instead of a contour. Our advice is to be careful with bronzer---or, to just NOT use bronzer for contouring. Here'southward why: contours are created to mimic peel tones, and bronzers are not. Bronzers tend to, well, make y'all statuary! They include reds and/or oranges, so it'due south very difficult to get the look you're going for. BUT! There's another, more important reason: contours tend to be matte, and bronzers tend to have a piffling flake of shimmer, which is not what y'all're looking for. If you're looking to create the illusion of a shadow, yous don't desire any shimmer in it. Y'all want it to be matte. So, if possible, stick to proper contouring products when contouring, or if you absolutely want to utilize bronzer, brand sure it's a matte formula.
  • Facial shapes are important. Contouring is more than of an art than a science, and every facial shape will crave a different strategy. The mode y'all contour a round face will exist different than the way yous profile an oval confront, and so on. Cosmopolitan has a corking mail service on how to contour for different facial structures.

Most cosmetics companies sell contouring kits, and they usually come with a number of different shades, so you can experiment until you lot detect something you similar.

One concluding give-and-take about contouring: you desire to underdo information technology. Contouring is a "less is more" kind of affair. Information technology takes some practice to get correct, so make sure you lot're practicing a "less is more" technique.

Product #viii: Highlight

Highlighter is like contour's sister, but she's a little more upbeat, a trivial more than bright, a little more sparkly, and she gets a lot more attention.

Men and women who are new to makeup don't e'er understand a highlighter's appeal: if you've just made yourself look sleek and angular, why would you lot want to mess with that expect?

When done correct, highlighter is makeup that attracts low-cal and creates a warm, glowy await. Using just contour will brand you look athwart, but information technology creates a mattified look that can be a footling flat.

There are a TON of different highlighters you tin can buy, and they're bachelor in liquid, cream, and powder. Some take shimmer, some don't (we'd suggest confronting using shimmer---highlighter is supposed to brand you glow and await warning; calculation sparkle is a little much).

And then how practise you choose a highlighter? Yous're looking for something that is juuuuuuuuuust about the color of your peel, with merely a little bit of smoothen. Select a color by looking start at your skin color---skin tones are usually divided into:

  • Pale to off-white skin
  • Fair to medium
  • Medium to nighttime and
  • Dark to deep skin tones.

If you have pale to off-white skin, a pearl shade can look fantastic; those who have a medium-to-dark complexions volition oft opt for a warmer, golden tone. Equally with all things makeup, y'all don't want to overdo highlighter, or you'll cease upward looking similar a neon sign.

There are a bunch of strategic ways to employ highlighter: You can employ it nether the brow os to make your eyes wait a fiddling lighter; y'all tin can add it over blush on your cheeks to make yourself await a little more vibrant; and you can add it to the inner corner of your eye when you're sleepy to make yourself look alarm. StyleCaster has a great post on dissimilar opportunities to utilize highlighter, and if yous're creative, you tin can probably come up upwardly with more.

Ane quick, boosted note: some people use highlighter BEFORE they profile; there's a lot of contend nearly that. We similar to use contour kickoff so add together highlight, because information technology's a way to keep from adding too much contour (if yous've added as well much contour, the highlighter can dampen it a chip), just similar everything else with makeup, y'all need to find what works for you.

Ok, one more quick, boosted notation: highlighter is very ofttimes used when contouring, but you can use highlighter all on its own. Technically, you don't need to contour before using a highlighter. That may seem obvious, but a lot of people who are new to makeup assume (reasonably!) that considering the two go together, you always need to use them both. Non the instance.

Product #9: Bronzer

A bronzer is a "use every day"-type product that gives a lilliputian color and glow to the complexion. It'south provides a little highlight for the cheekbones, and makes the wearer look healthy and vital. If you're feeling a little sallow or irksome, bronzer can accept a nice event, and information technology'll provide you with a dainty sun-kissed look.

Bronzers aren't also difficult to select; basically, you're looking for something one to 2 shades darker than your normal skin tone. If yous have fair-to-normal peel, try to observe a light-love-colored bronzer. If yous've got medium skin, looking for something rose-colored or aureate. If you lot've got dark skin, you'll want to detect something amber. As always, experiment, and see what works. Inquire your friends if the bronzer y'all're using is too strong, because that happens a LOT. Also remember that your skin colour changes during different seasons, and then if information technology's winter and yous're pale, have that into account; if information technology'south summer and already looking a little bronzed, be aware of that, also.

Equipment is important, and you lot'll need to choose the proper castor. You're aiming for something soft and large, and you desire to stay away from very dense brushes (like Kabuki brushes), considering dumbo brushes tend to pack a punch, and you'll probably end up using more of the makeup than you lot need. Stippling brushes are good for this purpose---they have beard that are layered, and they regulate the corporeality of corrective that you lot're calculation to your face. (Stippling brushes are kind of miraculous, past the way---the beard at the tip of the brush are thin but the bristles are thick at the bottom of the brush, making it difficult to overuse makeup).

You lot'll hear a lot of makeup artists talk about a "3" shape when it comes to applying bronzer. That may exist a fiddling confusing. In essence, yous're trying to accent the parts of the face that the sun would normally striking---your forehead, your cheekbones, and your jaw---and so you'd first your brush at your forehead, sweep back over your temple and then forward at your cheekbone, and and then sweep dorsum over your cheekbone and down your jawline. The motion, finer, ends up being a giant "iii" shape on your face. Here's an image that shows the technique.

You'll demand to be conscientious when apply bronzer, considering using the wrong colour---or over-applying---can give you an odd orange glow, or simply make you expect like yous take dirt on your face. Not what you're shooting for. And, as e'er---alloy, blend, alloy. Considering bronzer is a strong color tone, you demand to make certain that it fades gently and fully into the unlike areas where you've practical it. Watch for streaks.

What else? A lot of people get a petty dislocated between profile and bronzer, but we addressed that in the "Contour" section.

Product #x: Blush

For a lot of people, chroma is their accented, #1, favorite makeup item. It's elementary, it's like shooting fish in a barrel to use, and information technology's colorful. It'due south a fan favorite.

At that place are dozens, if not hundreds, of different chroma colors, and they're available in liquid, cream, or powder.

Well... that'southward just kind of true. Remember how nosotros simply said how yous tin get blush in a liquid, foam, or powder? By a wide majority, most people utilize powder. It'due south just kind of the fashion it is, and it makes sense---if blush is one of the concluding things yous'll put on, and you've already put on a liquid or cream primer, foundation, concealer, then on---you're going to desire to utilise a powder instead of using more liquids or creams. And, because you'll be using a pulverisation, you're going to need a good castor, so nosotros'll kickoff there. (UPDATE: Ok, we're incorrect---enough of people utilize liquid and cream blush. We'll write a post about it shortly. 🙂

Blushes usually come with a castor, simply those brushes are unremarkably meh, so we recommend tossing that castor and getting your own. Buy something that'south non also flat but not too round, sized about the width of your cheeks when you grinning, and reasonably soft. Ideally, yous'll find a brush that kind of looks like one of those pencil gnomes you get when you were a kid.

Once you've bought a fantastic, fabulous brush, yous'll want to apply in one of two places:

  • Along the cheekbones (but Not below the cheekbones, as that can actually make you lot look kind of jowly), or
  • On the "apples" of your cheeks. To detect your apples, go to the mirror and requite yourself a large grin, and at that place you lot go---the apples of your cheeks!

As always, blend and blend and blend. Information technology always looks strange when someone has a perfect circle of blush on each cheek, then make sure that doesn't happen to you.

Equally for the colors you should choose, it all depends on the tone of your peel. Hither's what we usually propose:

  • Fair Skin: the archetype---soft and pinkish blushes. Nothing also bold
  • Medium Skin: endeavour rose shades, and experiment with orange-ish or bang-up tones
  • Olive Skin: look into warm colors, similar reds, plums, purples, and cherry-red-browns
  • Nighttime Skin: yous have a wider range of colors you can choose from, and you should wait into olives, apricots, reds, reddish-plums, crimson-browns, and purples.

Production #xi: Countenance Pencils (and Gels and Powders)

We'll start with countenance pencils: countenance pencils are magical piddling things that can make thin eyebrows await lush and strong and beautiful. If your arches are a little bit weak, you tin sharpen them; if your brows are patchy or run thick-to-thin, you lot can fill them in; and if you have any kind of scarring from a cutting or from acne, you tin practice a little resurfacing.

We say "pencils," but you can color your eyebrows using gels and powders. Gels are slap-up for creating a brow shape, and powders are great for people who already take a solid brow but want to add some extra density to it.

Pencils do seem to be the most popular option, though, because they provide incredible versatility. Every bit we said, pencils tin be a lot of fun.

Of course, whatever eyebrow product you're using, you want to make sure that the colour you choose matches your natural eyebrow colour. If you're using a powder, y'all may need to combine powder hues to get the shade you're looking for.

We'd also suggest you buy a spoolie. These look kind of like mascara wands---they've got soft beard and a tapered superlative---simply they're built specifically to castor brows into place and keep them in line. Employ a spoolie when y'all're just starting to shape your forehead, and so when you're done, to fifty-fifty out any color pigments you've added to your brow.

Some other affair to keep in listen: all pencils are not created equal. They're not, and yous have a wide variety to choose from. There are superfine liners that allow yous draw fine hairs onto your browline; medium pencils that let you to exercise corrective work; and larger models that you lot need to apply with great care.

Lastly, like all aspects of makeup artistry, you want to be careful to not overdo countenance application, and y'all don't want to go also arch. You're trying to look glamorous, and not like a moving picture villain. If your friends are asking why you're aroused all the time, you may demand to tone downwards your eyebrow game.

Product #12: Eyeshadow

Every bit far as makeup goes, eyeshadow is by far the virtually emotive. Other types of makeup can be a little bit bland (foundation is vitally important, but it doesn't really razzle dazzle you), but eyeshadow---you can become every bit subtle or over-the-height and exciting equally you want. Eyeshadow can make you glamorous, or seductive, or colorful, or audacious, or simply joyous. Eyeshadow is Information technology.

This section could become VERY long, just we'll try to keep it short, and stick to the basics.

Eyeshadow is usually a pulverisation, only can exist made every bit liquid, cream, mousse, or pencil.  That 1 is pretty simple. The most mutual blazon is powder, and that comes in two varieties: loose and pressed. Loose eyeshadow have a lot of color pigment and really add some color, just they can exist difficult to work with. Pressed eyeshadows are more common, and are pretty easy to use---they're not very messy, and they blend pretty easily.

Sets are usually sold with a couple of different colors. Some are sold equally 2-color sets, others as iii-color sets, and still others are four- or 5-color sets. At that place'southward usually a light, an intermediate, and a dark shade, and many sets have colors all across the spectrum. Because there are many dissimilar regions of the center (and we'll talk virtually that in a second), lite hits the eyes in unique ways, and you'll want to use different shades on different parts of the eyelid.

The unlike color shades sold in an eyeshadow pack (commonly called an eyeshadow palette) are for employ on different parts of the heart:

  • The lightest shade usually goes on your brow bone
  • The shade that's a lilliputian fleck darker than the commencement shade usually goes on your eyelid
  • The shade after that goes to the crease of the eyelid (see beneath if you need an explanation of what the crease is) and
  • The darkest shade goes on the middle's outer corner

The eye has a number of different areas.

They are:

  • Highlight/Brow Bone: The area riiiiiiight below your eyebrow; yous tin experience the curve your bone
  • Contour/Crease: The area betwixt the brow os and the eyelid
  • Eyelid: Yous know where your eyelid is
  • Upper Lash Line: At the end of your eyelid; the function your eyelashes are attached to
  • Outer V: The part of your eye closest to your ear; this is where you upper lash line meets your lower lash line
  • Inner Corner: The area of your eye closest to your olfactory organ; information technology'due south this is where you upper lash line meets your lower lash line, right past the tear duct
  • Lower Lash Line: At the terminate of your eyelid; the part our eyelashes are attached to
  • Waterline: The shelf higher up your lower lash line that meets your really eyeball---be careful here!

If yous need a visual to help yous get an idea of each region, yous can check out this image.  This is a super-helpful diagram, and nosotros had to go all the style to Web Archive to observe this photo!

Y'all'll need to pick out a specific kind of brush. Considering the eye is a complicated place, you'll need to get different brushes for unlike jobs. Big brushes sweep on pigment, precision brushes create specific looks, blending brushes mix colors, and liner brushes add together color to the water line. If all of this sounds overwhelming, don't worry! It'due south actually all pretty simple, and we have a few posts that explain how to use each brush.

So, there's a lot to learn with eyeshadow! Simply those are a few of the about important things to keep in mind.

There's one other affair about eyeshadow that we demand to mention before nosotros wrap up this section: eyeshadow primer. We talk a little bit near it in the "Foundation Primer" section, but eyeshadow primer is a lilliputian different.

Equally the name suggests, eyeshadow primer is made specifically for utilize on the eyelids. Like foundation primer, it keeps eye makeup in place for a long menses of time, just it ALSO protects the skin of the eyelid. Equally you lot would imagine, the skin on the eyelid may be the most fragile skin on the entire body, and you can buy eyeshadow primers for dry out pare, chaffed skin, oily peel, and wrinkly pare. About people apply eye primer correct after applying foundation primer.

Product #13: Eyeliner

Eyeliner is a corrective practical across the lash line, which is the area of your eye that grows eyelashes. The corrective comes in many colors, and is used to give the eye depth and make it appear more dynamic, and when used with eyeshadow, information technology makes the optics announced defined and vibrant. Information technology's available in liquid, powder, gel, wax, and pencil (with pencil beingness the most popular), and depending on what kind you lot use, it can be angular and divers, or soft and smudgy.

Nosotros'll discuss each eyeliner selection beneath, just before we get started, there's something important we should share: If you lot're new to makeup, the idea of putting an eyeliner pencil to your lash line may seem a little scary, and that is TOTALLY OK. After all, the lash line is a very, very sensitive part of the body! And information technology'due south right side by side to your eyeball---some other very sensitive role of the trunk! So, if yous're a picayune freaked out at the thought of applying makeup to such a sensitive surface area of your confront, that's totally normal. If information technology helps, you can ease into it: the most popular eyeliner selection is a pencil with a very soft tip, but if that seems a footling horrifying to you lot, you can employ liquid or gels (and we'll tell you how, below).

Also, keep in mind that millions of women and men all over the world utilize eyeliner to their lash lines every mean solar day, and they're fine. No problems. With a gentle mitt a lilliputian practise, chances are pretty strong you'll be able to apply eyeliner too.

So let's talk about your options! Nosotros'll talk well-nigh the scary option---pencils---starting time, and so get to the less intimidating ones.

Eyeliner Pencils.

Eye pencils ordinarily come in darker shades, and they have a soft tip that you can sharpen to your own specification.

There are a couple of reasons why the archetype eyeliner pencil is a fantastic option. The first? Command. Pencils permit you to be very precise with your application of eyeliner, but they also allow for you to flub things up a bit. Liquid eyeliners are SUPER precise, and pencils allow you to make small mistakes without ruining your awarding. The 2nd: that smokey eye that we're all and so in dearest with. Pencils can be blendable and smudgeable, and that's a huge assist when you're trying to create a smokey center. 3rd: it's actually the easiest option, once you figure out how to use it, and information technology doesn't accept as much time to apply as other types of eyeliners.

They're not perfect---you'll have to sharpen it over again and again, and it'll never be every bit precise every bit a liquid eyeliner---but they're easy to use and every cosmetics company has dozens of options.

Liquid Eyeliner.

Liquid eyeliner is bold, dumbo, and unmistakable. Information technology's more precise than pencils, and you can apply liquid to make very thin or very thick lines, and dial the dramatic all the way upwards to 10 if yous like. Because it has such specific properties, at that place are some fantastic looks you can create with liquid eyeliner, and information technology's perfect for cat eyes and Goth/vampy looks.

Virtually of the time it's packaged in a gorgeous petty canteen that includes a petite brush with a super-sharp tip, or as a fine-tipped marker that you utilise directly to the center. It's almost always practical on the upper lash line, and because it's both dense and wet, it requires a VERY steady hand---and a lot of practice. Don't exist surprised if your first couple of times using a liquid eyeliner gets very messy---it's happened to all of us!

One word of caution: a lot of women and men who are new to makeup think that it's easier to learn about eyeliners using liquid eyeliner, as opposed to pencil eyeliner---in fact, the opposite is true. Considering pencils are smudgeable, and because liquid eyeliner is pretty unforgiving if you mess information technology up---it'southward easier to learn about eyeliner using pencils. As we said---exist gentle, and exist careful, and you'll be fine.

Gel Eyeliner.

If yous're looking for the perfect compromise between a pencil and a liquid eyeliner, gel eyeliner is what you lot're looking for. Information technology's the all-time of both worlds: you take the wet properties of a liquid, some of the control you can get with a pencil, and you lot still have a really dramatic and intense color pay-off.

Gel eyeliner is a thick, creamy substance that usually comes in a pot or a jar. Information technology usually comes with a fine-tipped or angled brush for application, and you tin can switch brushes if y'all want to effort for a different look. Angled brushes are ordinarily best, though.

Because eyeliner can take a while to dry, and it does have a trend to shift around a niggling bit, y'all want to make sure that you've used an heart primer, to make sure it stays put---and that'south doubly truthful if you have oily eyelids.

This is another production that is a ton of fun, because you can get creative with it. Information technology's fantastic for some creative looks (and it's superb for a smokey heart), and if you live in a humid climate, information technology's a good choice because it'due south a little less decumbent to smearing.

Powder / Cake Eyeliner.

This is the softest and least defined of all your eyeliner options. Information technology produces a soft, blendy, blurry look---so if you don't like the strict lines that a liquid eyeliner provides, and y'all desire something even more blendable than a pencil, powder/block is your all-time bet.

We take less to say about powder eyeliner, because it's non equally mutual as the other eyeliner varieties. Sephora, which sells dozens of everything, but sells i kind of pulverization eyeliner, and information technology's actually khol: Terracotta Khol Loose Powder Eyeliner. The bodily product is gorgeous, though---the bottle looks like an ornament.

Before nosotros stop upwards with eyeliners, here are some things to keep in mind as you lot acquire to use them:

  • For eyeliner, yous need a very precise hand. For many other makeups, you're blending the product, or spreading it across a large area of your face (retrieve "foundation" or "blush"). For eyeliner, you'll need to concentrate, because it's easy to make a mess of things. That's why it's easiest to put your elbow on your vanity or makeup tabular array or whatever flat, steady surface you're using.
  • Don't overdo information technology on the bottom lash line. That's a very modest area, and information technology's 1 of those "less is more" areas.
  • Don't employ liquid liner on your lower lash line. I think we mentioned this before, just information technology's a no-no. Liquid liner tends to run all over the place, and information technology'll go far your heart.
  • As with all things makeup, you really, really want to brand sure you're applying eyeliner symmetrically---especially if yous're going for a more dramatic wait. If yous use brush unevenly, information technology might non expect that bad, but if you utilize eyeliner unevenly, information technology'll await like your eyes are very different sizes, and that tin be a very strange await.

Product #14: Mascara

Let's talk lashes! Mascara is another one of our favorites. It's an eyelash enhancer, and it can be used to lengthen, thicken, darken, or curlicue. It's available in a range of colors, and it's commonly sold as a liquid, a cream, or a cake. And, give thanks goodness, at that place are waterproof formulas if yous're planning to weep or get stuck in the rain.

Liquids are the most common type of mascara, and so we'll become with that. Ultimately, you're looking for length (mascara tin can make your lashes look much longer), volume (a adept mascara can make your lashes look fuller), and colour (mascaras, obviously, make your eyelashes dark and smoldery-looking). Y'all're trying to avert clumps and over-layering.

There'south a lot to think virtually when yous're applying mascara, and so here are some pointers:

Use Mascara Primer. Just like the other primers, you apply mascara primer earlier applying the corrective, and it keeps the production in place for way longer than information technology would normally stay, AND it makes the lashes wait thicker and more voluminous.

Use a Steady Hand. If you're new to applying mascara, become comfy in front of your mirror and lean your elbow on the tabular array / countertop / whatever. Go ho-hum and exist gentle.

Pick Your Wand. Mascara wands tin can exist very dissimilar, and that makes a difference. You can utilize unlike wands to get different looks. Some help you curl your lashes (those are usually curved wands), some are skilful for shorter lashes, some are good for long lashes. At that place are wands with long bristles and brusk bristles, bendable rubber wands vs. stiff silicone ones, wands tapered downward to a indicate, etc.

Don't Glimmer! One not bad trick is to keep your mouth open while applying. For whatever reason, keeping your mouth is broad open keeps you from blinking. Weird, merely true.

Don't Overdo It. There is a limit to how much mascara you lot tin can pile on to your eyelashes. It's your job to find that sweet spot betwixt "not plenty" and "way besides much." Seriously----if you use too much mascara, y'all tin can literally run into the clumps on the eyelids, and that's a niggling gross. Even if there rest of your makeup is perfect, if there's besides much mascara on the eyelids, you'll look crazy.

That should requite y'all some guidance, but there's one last thing nosotros need to mention:

Believe information technology or non, you lot have to exist careful with mascara! Here's why:

  • Information technology goes bad. It's true! It really expires afterwards two to five months. Using expired mascara tin lead to bacterial infections, and you don't want that.
  • If y'all use it incorrectly, it tin can brand your lashes autumn off. Yes, for real. If you lot don't take your mascara off before you crawl into bed, it tin can really cause your lashes to fall... off. That's terrible, and so be careful! We don't want that to happen to y'all.
  • Waterproof mascara isn't an everyday kind of matter. Waterproof mascara adheres to lashes because it'south sticky, and because information technology'due south pasty, information technology can go tugged in every direction. Too much tugging, and your lashes loose strength and fall out.
  • Don't curlicue your lashes subsequently using mascara. This is the same principle equally the last tip---if you scroll your lashes later adding mascara, they get tugged every which manner, become weak, and autumn out.
  • Your eyelashes are just little hairs---so take care of them! Nosotros don't think of eyelashes as fiddling hairs, but that'southward what they are, and they need to be moisturized.

Production #15: Setting Spray

Y'all've but learned nigh a tremendous number of makeup products! You may be wondering: how on earth do all these different types of makeups stay on a person's confront? That'due south where setting sprays come into play.

It's the laaaaaast step of the makeup process (aside from lips), and information technology has one purpose: to continue your makeup on your face for a long time, and to continue information technology from moving. Information technology keeps your makeup products from melting, shifting, fading, or (God forestall) cracking. This isn't the virtually widely used production, but information technology seems like the more serious yous get almost makeup, the more you lot similar setting spray.

If yous're e'er in a state of affairs where you're going to be very hot and sweaty or you need to keep your face on for a very, very long time, setting spray is your best friend. And, as you lot might have guessed---makeup artists who practice weddings LOVE setting spray.

The spray itself feels kind of nice---it'southward more of a "gentle misting" sort of thing, than an actual spray. Fifty-fifty bated from the practical utilize for setting spray, it'south kind of a nice manner to consummate your makeup routine (although, it'southward important to note, a lot of people utilise setting spray afterwards their face and eyes are done, and before their lips. Nosotros talk more about social club of awarding beneath).

Production #16: Lipstick (and Lip Liner and Lip Gloss)

This is an easy one, correct? Lipstick is lipstick. Super easy. The showtime piece of makeup that people reach for when they start using makeup is lipstick.

It's seemingly the most obvious makeup tool, but is that true?

Nope! It might seem like the well-nigh accessible cosmetic, but there's really a lot going on with lipstick. Hither's what y'all need to know.

Kickoff, the basics: lipsticks (too as lip stain, lip liner, and lip gloss) add colour and tone and texture to the lips. There are thousands of very high-finish options, but at that place some incredibly first-class drugstore versions available, if you're willing to endeavor new products and experiment.

The come in three finishes: matte, satin, and gloss. They're unremarkably waterproof and come as sticks, although there are varieties that you tin can apply with a brush, a rollerball, or your fingers.

Here'due south a quick description of each finish:

Matte. This is smooth and Non shiny. It usually appears as a solid color and doesn't reflect whatever light. Matte colors are usually pretty classic---red, pinkish, cherry, rust, and then on---only there'south a lot of diverseness. They may tend to dry the lips a fiddling flake (or a lot, sometimes), but they're gorgeous and almost e'er fashionable.

Creamy. These have a liiiiiittle chip more shine than the matte diverseness. They tin bleed a lilliputian fleck, so you demand to give your lips a quick look throughout the day to make sure the product is still in place. There may be a fiddling more variation in color.

Satin. Shiny! Glossy! Gorgeous! There are plenty of reds and pinks and assuming colors, simply you lot'll encounter a lot of lighter tones.

If you lot're looking at lipsticks, here are some things you'll want to keep in listen:

  • Think almost you lot lips and your dryness level. Lipsticks are created to accommodate people with different moisture needs. If you've got super-dry lips, buy a lipstick that promises to keep your lips hydrated. It's a sad fact, but a lot of lipsticks that promise to keep your lips hydrated won't really do so, so you need to try new products until y'all discover one that does.
  • If you don't want brilliant colors, go with nude lipsticks. Nude lipsticks are meant to mimic your natural skin tone, but perhaps provide a picayune color. Try to choose a nude shade that'south simply a liiiiittle bit darker than your natural shade.
  • Matte lipsticks and cream lipsticks don't always practise a good job of hiding any of the wrinkles or lines on your lips, so if that'southward what y'all're looking for, become for a satin / sleeky lipstick.

Product #16.i: Lip Primers

We've already mentioned the importance of foundation primers, eye primers, and mascara primers, and just as important are lip primers. They do three things:

  • Hydrate the lips. This is super-of import, because so many varieties of lipsticks dry you out. "Hydrate as much as possible" is kind of cloak-and-dagger commandment of makeup---makeup is actually pretty harsh on your skin, so e'er exist thinking, "Is there a hydrating version of whatsoever it is I want to buy?"
  • Decrease feathering. This isn't every bit much of a problem as it used to be---lipsticks have come a long manner---but information technology still happens, and it's something to await out for. A good lip primer will keep feathering on lockdown.
  • Keeps your lipstick on for the long haul. More than than any other part of your face up, your lips are constantly moving, and that means your lipstick volition exist wearing down. A lip primer volition go on your lipstick in identify for as long as possible, and go on information technology as assuming for as long every bit possible.

Production #sixteen.2: Lip Stain

Lip stain isn't nigh equally well-nigh as popular as lipstick, simply we should probably mention it. Whereas lipstick is a product that goes directly onto the lip, lip stain penetrates the lip and actually stains it. That sounds a trivial harsh, merely the do good of lip stain is that it truly lasts for a long time, and it's a lot less likely to rub off. Later all, information technology's a stain! It stains your lips! It'southward non going anywhere.

It's ordinarily sold as a liquid or a gel, and just like regular lipstick, it tin can seriously dry you out (then be certain to moisturize your lips before using it). In that location are fewer color options available than regular lipstick, only they're always bachelor the classic lip colors, which would be scarlet and pink (and peach).

On the plus side, it doesn't have that weird taste that lipstick can have, and it won't become on your teeth.

If you're interested in lip stain, we'd suggest mastering lipstick first. Infant steps.

Production #16.3: Lip Liner

Lip liner is another superhero on team makeup. It can:

  • Provide a great outline for your lipstick, to make sure that you're not overdoing information technology during application;
  • Make full in uneven areas on the upper or lower edges of your lips, and make them appear fuller, rounder, or even plumper; and
  • Keep feathering to a minimum.

Information technology tin even be used as a solo product to accentuate the shape of the lips. In a discussion: awesome.

It's ordinarily sold as a pencil or in a tube.

If you lot're looking to buy a lip liner, there'due south only one unbreakable commandment: your lip liner must be the same colour as the lipstick yous plan to wear. That's the nearly important thing. So, if you're buying a lip liner, brand sure you know what color lipstick you're going to utilise. If the crossing brands, do your all-time to observe a similar tone.

Production #sixteen.4: Lip Gloss

Concluding just non least, lip gloss.

If lipstick is all nearly adding color to the lips, gloss is all near adding a lustrous smooth to information technology. In that location'south a whole range of finishes available, from metallic, to glossy, to glittery. Some lip glosses are flavored, and gustation like vanilla or strawberry, and how fantastic is that?

At that place'south i very big negative to lip gloss: it'southward pasty, and your hair Volition get stuck in it. That's a huge pain.

If y'all tin go past that, though, or simply manage to stay out of the wind, lip gloss is a fantastic finish to your lips.

Social club of Makeup Application

This is a question that we get a LOT, and hither's the absolute, 100% correct, final reply: everybody applies makeup in a different social club.

Seriously---everybody does this differently.

But, if we had to say was the well-nigh common order is, we'd say this:

  • Moisturizer
  • Primer
  • Eyeshadow Primer
  • Foundation
  • Setting Powder (some people apply this correct before the setting spray; besides---non everyone uses setting pulverisation, only we figured we'd include it anyhow)
  • Concealer
  • Contour (note: a lot of people skip the contour and use a bronzer to contour, then highlighter and then blush, OR bronzer, blush, then highlighter)
  • Highlighter
  • Bronzer
  • Blush
  • Eyebrows (some people do brows after eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara, to make sure they lucifer)
  • Eyeshadow
  • Eyeliner
  • Mascara
  • Setting Spray (some people do this before lipstick; some others do information technology after lipstick)
  • Lips

Honestly, y'all'll have to find what works for y'all. Seriously. Go to MakeupAddiction on Reddit (Reddit can exist awful, merely the makeup subreddit is actually really proficient) and y'all'll see dozens of conversations about the guild in which people apply makeup, and---surprise---no 2 people use all the same products and use in the same order. The only part of the routine that seems to stay the same is that most everyone moisturizes, and so uses primer and foundation and concealer. Some people do their eyes after they do their concealer; some leave their eyes for the finish.

If it helps, here's one way to make sense out of the order of makeup application:

You use moisturizer to take care of your skin. Simple.

You use primer to set your skin for makeup. Also pretty uncomplicated.

Y'all utilize foundation to create a sort of blank folio for you to put the residual of your makeup on. Foundation will even out any inconsistency in shade, and leave you with a uniform facial skin tone. And that's a good thing, considering it gives you a blank canvas on which to add color to your face. If y'all stopped after applying foundation, you'd expect dull and blank, and if you tried applying color to your face without beginning making your skin one even color tone, your makeup would look uneven and blotchy.

You use eye foundation to get your eyes set up for eyeshadow, and lip primer to get your lips ready for lipstick.

You use the rest of your makeup to give your face color. Contour and highlighter will add together dimension and depth to your face by creating the advent of calorie-free and shadows, and bronzer and blush will add color.

You use a setting spray to keep everything together.

That may be a simplistic explanation, but it's a good start, and it's a helpful fashion to think about things.

GOOD WORK!

If you're still here, you are absolutely astonishing! This may be the longest mail service ever written, and yous just finished it! Good work!

Seriously, good work. This post is un-believe-ably long. We tried to make information technology shorter, but we wanted to include everything nosotros could about makeup.
